Why does New Zealand have only two major supermarket groups?

We compare New Zealand to Australia and the UK, who enjoy the benefit of many competing supermarkets. So is it because of our small population? We compare out country to another with the same population. Does it have just two supermarket groups or does it prove that population size has nothing to do with it?
